How to Network
What is networking and how can it be of benefit to your business?
Networking is simply connecting with people of like interests for the purpose of uncovering opportunities, increasing knowledge or sharing information. More simply, it’s getting to know people and building relationships. Many people are afraid of networking, but the truth is, we network every day - with our family, our work colleagues and at social events.
Over 75% of new business is gained through word of mouth and therefore networking should be an integral part of the marketing strategy of every company that is serious about doing business.
Why is networking important when establishing a business?
As well as identifying new business opportunities, networking allows you to share ideas, experience and good practice, meet inspirational role models, combat isolation by making new contacts, increase your confidence and self-esteem and build long term relationships. In the early stages of business it is easy to suddenly become isolated and lose touch with what is happening around you - therefore missing out on opportunities that could be vital to your business.
How do I go about networking?
Where can I find out about networking events?
Networking is one of those things that we all agree with, we all acknowledge the benefits, and we can all understand how it helps. There many support organisations in the North East who offer networking events on a regular basis. The first step is to decide what type of networking event would suit you – mixed or women-only events, lunch-time or evening events, formal or informal and in which part of the region.
How do I network on other occasions or at other events?
The art of networking, networking techniques, effective networking…….. it seems that everyone is searching for the answer to this well-kept secret. Effective networking comes with practice and as long as you have done some preparation (eg, develop some questions, a short snappy introduction and remember to take your business cards), and learn to relax, you will find, with practice, that the rest comes naturally.
What are the top tips to help me make the most of networking? How can I improve my networking skills?
Planning...
Choose carefully the events you go to. If possible obtain a guest list in advance.
Firstly determine why you are attending the event for information purposes and networking or specifically networking.
Prepare a ‘what do you do’ answer that’s short, snappy and memorable.
Arriving...
Arrive on time for the event – it always seems a lot easier to introduce yourself to someone when you are one of the first arrivals.
Wear your name badge on the right. It’s where your eye goes to when you shake hands.
Use ‘hosts’ & organisers to introduce you to people, they are generally well connected and secondly it’s in their interest to do so.
Connecting/respecting...
Treat everyone the same and never make assumptions about the people you meet.
Mix not Magnet!
If you are not very confident try not to attach yourself (like glue) to the first person you get speaking to. Remember the person you are talking to, whilst they might be enjoying your company, probably wants to be able to chat to one or two other people as well.
Listen up...
Listen to what other people do first and (everyone is interested if you’re interested in them) and listen for link words that connect with who you are and what you do.
Talking...
Keep conversation to neutral topics, avoid monopolising the conversation. Ask questions that require more than yes/no answers.
You will create a better first impression if you deliberately copy the pace and volume of the person you are speaking to.
Abundance – don’t ask, offer!
Offer information and contacts to match the links. It provides a reason for follow-up and staying in contact.
To drink or not to drink?
Generally you need a clear head so moderation is the key. Yes it can help confidence but can give others a negative impression.
Get out of your comfort zone..
For every person you meet and every hour you spend with them, they will be an ambassador for you and make another 10 recommendations on your behalf
Often the crucial moment (the business card)...
If people are interested in what you do generally they will ask for a card – don’t offer your card right at the outset.
Taking notes...
As a memory aid it can often be useful to make notes about a person on the back of their business card.
Follow up...
Try to follow up with people you have met (recap on your notes on business cards, add useful contacts to your database).
Finally...
If you have tried all the tips and you still don’t feel comfortable 'try' again! Practice makes perfect.
What are the common networking mistakes?
Avoiding networking completely. The myth and mystery that sometimes surrounds networking meaning that it becomes an issue, a fear or skill gap that requires a training course. Networking is simply building and forging relationships but the benefits can be tremendous. By joining a networking initiative such as Women Into the Network (WIN), you become part of a helpful network, which offers rehearsal space in a supportive and non-threatening environment. Being part of a network can help eliminate any fear and help you network your way to success.
